The United Nations has played a critical role in promoting peace and development for all. Most indices, measuring human development tell a positive story - a story of our shared success. It is a story we should tell more often.

Technological advances and social and economic progress, we never envisioned, have become a reality. This gives us hope that mankind can once again prove that no challenge is too big to overcome - that we are right to dream big.

This autumn has already produced a truly impressive harvest. The 2030 Agenda and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda alone, amount to a bumper crop and I am optimistic that we will see an excellent result from COP21, indeed Iceland recently pledged a 40% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.

Speech given by Gréta Gunnarsdóttir, Iceland’s Ambassador to the United Nations, on global road safety and the consequences of brain and spinal cord injuries.

Road Safety is important for all States alike and Iceland is pleased to have cosponsored the resolution again this year. We are now in the fourth year of the Decade of Action for Road Safety. We have set ambitious goals to improve road safety, thereby preventing serious life-altering injuries and the loss of lives, aside from the economic costs involved with traffic accidents.
